Debate Between CMPA and WGC on Content Authorship in Copyright Act Review

October 29, 2018

This week a Standing Committee Meeting on Canadian Heritage sparked debate between the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) and the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) on content authorship with regards to the Copyright Act review. While the WGC proposed an amendment which would jointly designate screenwriters and directors as authors, the CMPA argued that no change is required to the Act, as the industry has long regarded producers as authors as they bring together creative elements to bring a project from concept to screen.
