Film industry professionals sign letter protesting potential CMF-Telefilm merger

As reported in The Globe and Mail and Playback April 19th, a group of 51 filmmakers and producers signed a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister of Canadian Heritage Mélanie Joly expressing concerns over a potential merger of Telefilm and the Canada Media Fund (CMF). The letter reportedly stresses the importance and value of Telefilm’s focus on film as opposed to television and other digital formats while also thanking the government for its ongoing investment in Canadian content. The notion of a “super agency” that would bring together Telefilm and the CMF and/or other federal bodies related to the media production industry has been raised through the Canadian Content in a Digital World consultations led by Minister Joly.
