Toronto, August 31, 2015 — The Canada Media Fund (CMF) published today its online bilingual Annual Report for the 2014-2015 fiscal year which outlines its role in shaping Canada’s audiovisual industry and driving the digital economy.
As detailed in the Annual Report, the CMF provided $365.5M in funding to Canadian television and digital media projects in 2014-2015. A total of 496 television and related digital media productions were supported through its Convergent Stream and 108 innovative and interactive digital media projects through its Experimental Stream. This investment in Canada’s audiovisual content industry triggered a total of $1.3B of industry activity, an 11.3% increase from the previous year.

“Key performance indicators reveal that the CMF’s funding programs, coupled with an array of promotional initiatives and in-depth industry research on current and upcoming trends, succeeded in providing valuable support for producers to create compelling, successful content for Canadian and world audiences to enjoy,” adds Valerie Creighton, CMF President and CEO. “Based on feedback we receive from all over the world, we can be proud of the political will and policies that allow talented Canadians to excel on the world stage and that keep Canada at the forefront of the economically and culturally significant content industry.”
In 2014-2015, the CMF introduced international matching fund programs encouraging codevelopment and coproduction of content between Canadian producers and those from Belgium, Brazil, and New Zealand. Other notable partnerships established during the same time period include BDC Capital—a subsidiary of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)—the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS), and accelerators across Canada.
In addition to its financial support, the CMF also continued to provide valuable industry intelligence to its stakeholders. In 2014-2015, the CMF published 11 research projects and white papers in addition to 53 posts on the Trendscape blog, now rebranded CMF Trends.
The Annual Report also provides information on a number of CMF initiatives designed to promote the success of Canadian content, including national red carpet events in Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, and Yukon and international partnerships with events in Brazil, Colombia, France, Spain and the United States. The CMF along with Telefilm Canada and the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) also continued supporting the brand Eye on Canada by launching Eyeoncanada.ca.
The Annual Report provides a complete overview of the CMF’s activities throughout 2014-2015. It contains detailed information on funding results as well as data on the success of projects funded by the CMF in terms of audience, critical acclaim and international sales.
