Java Films to distribute Beyond the Autism Spectrum
Winnipeg production company Merit Motion Pictures recently shook hands on a distribution deal with distributor Java Films, based in France, who will be bringing feature-length documentary, Beyond the Autism Spectrum: A Family’s Year Confronting Autism, to the international market. Directed by Steve Suderman, Beyond the Autism Spectrum follows the journey of parents Carly and Stef after their two year-old son Oskar is diagnosed with autism. Struggling to balance his demanding treatment schedule with the everyday needs of their five children, they are forced to confront a difficult question: does accepting Oskar mean accepting his autism? A compelling and intimate portrayal of unconditional love, the film will premiere within Canada in October 2017, alongside the project’s digital media component, an app designed to help families of children with autism navigate their child’s developmental
Since 2005, Java has established itself as one of Europe’s most prominent distributors of feature and television documentaries, providing support and distribution to both finished projects and those still in development. The films in their catalogue cover a range of global topics with a particular focus on hot-button environmental and social issues, such as the Syrian refugee crisis, and the current United States political landscape. Kathryn Bonnici, head of the company’s Acquisitions and Development department, says of the partnership, “We were very moved by Oskar’s story and are delighted to be distributing Beyond the Autism Spectrum.” Java is currently working on an outreach campaign, to prepare for the film’s global release this fall.
