Mental Health First Aid Training

  • IATSE Local 856 332 Bannatyne Avenue Winnipeg, MB, R3A 0W5 Canada (map)

On Screen Manitoba — in partnership with IATSE 856 — is hosting Mental Health First Aid Training on November 18 and 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (with lunch provided) at IATSE 856 Office (5th Floor, 332 Bannatyne Ave, Winnipeg).

Most of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack — we’d start CPR, or call 911. But too few of us would know how to respond if we saw someone having a panic attack, or if we were concerned that a friend or co-worker might be showing signs of an addiction.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or crisis.

Delivered over 2 days, participants in this course will learn about a number of mental health problems: substance use disorders, mood disorders, anxiety and trauma-related disorders and psychosis-related disorders. They will also learn intervention skills and gain confidence in their ability to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Jennifer Dann is a Registered Social Worker in the Province of Manitoba, currently working for a Regional Health Authority in the role of Patient Relations. She also worked, for a number of years, as a Social Worker for a Provincial Psychiatric facility. She is passionate about providing mental health education, teaching both Mental Health First Aid, and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). Jennifer's aim is to normalize life struggles, reduce stigma and promote both community and personal wellness.
