Sustainable Production: Carbon Calculators with Green Spark Group. (virtual)
Quantify and visualize the carbon footprint of production activities. Training will be delivered for two carbon calculators: albert & PEAR.
About the instructor
Samantha is a sustainability consultant with Green Spark Group. While studying at Quest University Canada in Squamish, BC, she implemented a successful waste management system that diverted over 80% of the university’s student waste from landfill. She was awarded a Showcase Presenter position for her undergraduate thesis on waste contamination at local food service institutions and has presented at various events including a TEDx conference. Sam values community and is passionate about empowering people and businesses to reduce their impacts on the environment. While working as an Environmental PA on Y: The Last Man (FX, 2021), she engaged crew in recycling and reusables initiatives, and coordinated surplus food donation through Second Harvest in the Greater Toronto Area. Sam is hopeful that humans will overcome the global climate crisis and is dedicated to supporting that change in the motion picture industry.

About the instructor
Ashleigh Prince is a senior on-production sustainability consultant. She has worked in the entertainment industry including, music, TV, film and live events, for the last 30 years. While working on the hit ABC show, “Nashville” in its first season, Ashleigh worked with department heads to bring about more sustainable practices across the show. Next she brought the film “Unacceptable Levels” to Nashville in 2012, to a sold out audience. The reaction by the audience to this film sparked the creation of Ecogal: The Curious Consumer, a pilot and blog.
Ashleigh brings her wealth of experience in entertainment to Green Spark Group and will focus her energy on advancing sustainable practices in Tennessee.

Ian Harris – Entertainment Lawyer
Ian’s practice focuses on legal transactions in the entertainment industry with an emphasis on film and TV production, video games, interactive digital media, privacy, and intellectual property acquisition, distribution and protection. Ian also works with Mark Edwards in the firm’s entertainment litigation practice.
Ian is a trusted counselor whose clients value his careful drafting and unflagging attention to detail. The Insiders' Guide to Science and Nature Filmmaking - Presented by CBC The Nature of Things in collaboration with On Screen Manitoba and Doc Manitoba
The Nature of Things is offering a one-day workshop and networking opportunity for up to 15 selected documentary filmmakers or production crew.
The goal of this in-person workshop is to introduce participants to key decision-makers and insider information about science and nature filmmaking, from how to come up with a great pitch to how to work with our hosts.
CBC’s Sue Dando and co-host Sarika Cullis-Suzuki will lead the workshops and networking session alongside independent producers with experience creating for The Nature of Things.
This workshop is part of a series of cross-Canada workshops and screenings in which The Nature of Things team has been inspiring the next generation of filmmakers and engaging with fans of the series.
As part of this Winnipeg tour, The Nature of Things in partnership with Winnipeg Public Library will also be hosting a public screening event on March 14, 2024, at the Millennium Library.

Legal Considerations for the Media Production Industry: Production Financing Essentials, will take place on February 28, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Creative Manitoba classroom (4th floor, 300-245 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg). Participants will also have the option to participate virtually (via a live stream).
Hosted by Mark Edwards (Managing Partner, Entertainment Lawyer, Edwards Creative Law), Michael Duboff (Entertainment Lawyer, Edwards Creative Law), and Brian Clasper (Director of Film Financing and Tax Credits) this session will focus on production financing, including sources of funding, financing mechanism and structures, entities and organizations involved in production financing, cash flows and waterfalls, and a production case study.

This presentation illustrates the roles and responsibilities of the varied film industry professionals reflected in the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulation. It has been customized with the inclusion of film industry related examples, photos and exercises to ensure a relevant, informative and engaging experience for all participants.
Firearms Safety Awareness with Dave Brown
This in-person, cross-departmental seminar is designed to increase awareness about firearms and firearms safety on film sets. Using a visual and hands-on approach, the seminar will illustrate how firearms and replica firearms should be handled on film sets; demonstrate proper safe handling and checking procedures on firearms and replica firearms; explain local rules and procedures on permits and notifications; and answer questions about firearms safety in the entertainment industry.
Mental Health First Aid Training
Delivered over 2 days, Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or crisis.
