Explore the city’s influence on their distinctive cinematic visions and the role of this unique community in gaining global recognition. This panel delves into the intersection of place, artistry, and filmmaking in Winnipeg’s vibrant film scene and will be moderated by Angela Heck, producer, director, and Executive Director of the Whistler Film Festival Society.

About the Panelists
Guy Maddin has directed or co-directed thirteen feature-length movies, including Rumours (2024), My Winnipeg (2007), and The Saddest Music in the World (2003). His screenwriting collaborators include Nobel Laureate Kazuo Ishiguro, poet John Ashbery, and longtime friend George Toles. His movies Archangel (1990) & The Heart of the World (2000) both won National Society of Film Critics Awards for Best Experimental Film.
Matthew Rankin is a Winnipeg-born filmmaker known for Universal Language (2024), The Twentieth Century (2019) and Municipal Relaxation Module (2022). Universal Language (2024), Matthew Rankin's latest film, is Canada's official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
About the Moderator
Angela Heck is the Executive Director of the Whistler Film Festival Society. Prior to joining WFF she served as Executive Director, Jazz Winnipeg; Director of Digital & Strategic Initiatives at the National Screen Institute; and enjoyed roles at Winnipeg Art Gallery (Qaumajuq), Tactica Interactive, CBC Manitoba, Quest University Canada and the National Film Board of Canada. As a producer she has worked extensively in the adventure realm, with productions in the mountains of Tibet and British Columbia and on the sea in Antarctica. Her first film roles were as distribution assistant at the Winnipeg Film Group and sleeping in a Guy Maddin film.
